Over the past fiscally shocking months I thought we had seen it all in regards to American corporate greed. We’ve had instances of massive fraud, incomprehensive incompetence, exorbitant bonuses awarded to executives of failing companies, and too many other manifestations of greed on behalf of corporate America to detail here. Now we are witness to another egregious example, a thoughtless and irresponsible act of greed by none other than the National Football League!

Yes, you read that last sentence correctly. The NFL has been talking to officials in London about hosting the Super Bowl sometime in the near future. As FoxNews.com reported today, April 24th, a senior NFL huge-wig has confirmed that ‘substantial talks’ have been held with London officials to ship the largest American sporting event overseas.

I don’t reckon the NFL people wanted this information to leak out – especially not on NFL Draft Weekend. The BBC Sport news organization scooped the tale and place out the word which was then picked up here in the United States by Fox. This morning it is a hot topic on talk radio.

Preposterous! What is the NFL thinking especially now in our time of financial disaster and a crisis of confidence? How could they even consider as a remote possibility outsourcing the largest sporting event of the year every year, an event which has become a quasi American holiday, a sports gala which is the largest in the world emanating from right here in the United States showcasing our country as well as the host city?

And yet, the top NFL buffoons are serious about this. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has always had the thought of expanding the NFL overseas. We have had several preseason and now regular season games abroad. Last fall the San Diego Chargers flew to London to play the New Orleans Saints, a journey of many thousands of extra miles just to satisfy the whacky dreams of the Commissioner. It was a tiring week for the players and a logistic challenge for team staff. For what I question? Money is the answer – a manifestation of excessive greed.

There has been an interest in doing this for some time according to insiders in the NFL organization; only now has it been confirmed as a distinct possibility. A spokesman for London’s official visitors’ organization says “Ever since the NFL started playing games in London we have been in discussions with the NFL about what is involved in staging the Super Bowl from the host city prospective. It continues to be something we discuss on a regular basis, without there being any specific timetable or plot in place.”

The next three Super Bowls have been awarded to cities in Florida, Texas, and Indiana ensuring the NFL won’t abandon America any time soon – at least not for three years. Don’t count on anything after that. If the NFL and Roger Goodell can shake down London for enough money, you can rest assured it will be very enticing to go there.

That’s how awarding a host city the Super Bowl goes these days, sort of a high bid situation. Money talks. The NFL holds some cities for ransom while rewarding those who have built new stadiums and punishing those who refuse.

On January 26, 2003, San Diego was the chosen site for Super Bowl XXVII and place on an brilliant show in gorgeous weather, had rave reviews from attendees and football officials, and was deemed one of the better cities to have ever hosted a game. But, the Commissioner was unsatisfied with the venue, Qualcomm Stadium. He said then in no uncertain terms, while in the host city as a guest, that San Diego would not see another Super Bowl unless and until it built a new stadium.

New stadiums do not come cheap these days. The team and city would have to come up with at least $500 million dollars – and probably lots more – to satisfy the greed of the Commissioner and NFL. It was a shakedown, plain and simple. To date San Diego has not backed down on their stance that cities should not pay for new stadiums for football teams which are awash in cash, Super Bowl be damned!

Super Bowls bring thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions in tourist dollars for the week of festivities. In San Diego’s case, it was a family affair where the city offered varied entertainment opportunities such as Sea World, Wild Animal Park, and the San Diego Zoo suitable for families as well as gorgeous beaches in January for visitors to delight in. It was an exciting time for locals as well as tourists. And profitable for the city.

Yet NFL officials have let the cat out of the bag: “The NFL is a global property, has a global audience, and London is an incredible city from a sports fan’s perspective. I don’t reckon it’s an unrealistic prospect at all.” says Mark Waller, marketing and sales guru for the NFL.

You have been forewarned; get on the hook – bombard the NFL with calls, emails, and whatever else you can do to let these greed-driven nincompoops know that we won’t allow this insulting thought of moving our Super Bowl to a foreign country. If they still persist in so doing, cancel all NFL season tickets to let them know WE pay the bills for their overpaid staff including the Commissioner.

Maybe they will get the message that we are mad as hell that they would even consider this stupidity and intend to be proactive in voicing our displeasure at any attempt to outsource OUR Super Bowl

Weak Job Growth Present Major Opportunities

A quarterly survey conducted by Manpower Inc. concluded that U.S. employment expectations has fallen to its lowest level since 2003.  Countries with strong ties to the U.S. economy are also seeing an effect on their national job market.  The UK employment outlook is at its lowest since 1994, all in an environment of rising oil prices and inflation.

One of the toughest hit group of this job environment, as seen in many recessions, are new college graduates.  The U.S. Labor Department reported that in the second quarter of this year, unemployment among 20- to 24-year-olds, the typical post-graduate age group, was 9.8 percent.  This is 1.7 percent higher than in the second quarter of 2001, which was around the same time as the last U.S. recession.  Meanwhile, the U.S. Labor Department reported last July that the overall unemployment reached 5.7 percent.

The most affected by this job market are those looking to work in the financial-services industry due to the subprime-mortgage crisis.  As most people would say, these recent graduates are all victims of terrible timing.

Yet, there is a small segment of recent graduates that has been particularly hit hard by the recent recession.  Those who also graduated during the past recession.

Daniel Hsu recently graduated from the London Business School with a Masters in Finance.  Unfortunately for him, he also graduated in 2002 from the Walter A. Haas School of Business with a Bachelors in Science Degree in Business Administration.  “I really never thought this could happen twice in one decade,” Hsu said.  “Before I entered both universities, I would look at the salary report of the previous graduates and reckon to myself ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m going to make that much money after graduating,’ but in the end it’s nearly impossible to get an interview.”

Nonetheless, many recent graduates are taking the opportunity to pursue “dream” careers that are outside of their expected or traditional career path.  Hsu has really done it twice.  Six months after graduating with his B.S. degree in 2002 and after a small stint as a janitor, Hsu became a resident DJ at 1015 Folsom Nightclub in San Francisco, CA.  “I have loved music my entire life.  I got my first guitar when I was in the sixth grade and started DJing in 1998, but I never thought I would ever do it for a living.”  

After two years of DJing and studying music production, Hsu chose to return to his business background and started a career as an Independent Financial Adviser.  “I really had a fantastic time with my music career, but I needed something more stable and at a slower pace,” Hsu said.  Two years later, Hsu would choose to return to business school at London Business School, but he had no thought that lightning would strike twice.

“Having lived in the [San Francisco] Bay Area, you could see all the houses popping up for sale and you knew something terrible was going to happen,” said Hsu.  Something terrible did happen, in June 2007 two Bear Sterns hedge funds collapsed, which was just the start of the current economic turmoil.

With a specialized degree in Finance, Hsu’s career prospects were few.  “When compared to MBA students, most companies aren’t going to hire a Masters in Finance student for consulting or marketing,” said Hsu.  Once again, Hsu would take things into his own hands and do something that he had always dreamed of.

Hsu and a fellow classmate, who preferred to remain anonymous for future job prospects, formed “T.I.L. Darling – The Online Clothing Boutique” (www.theonlineclothingboutique.com) as part of their required final student project.  “Before coming to London, I really wanted to study fashion, but my parents did not reckon it was practical enough.  Oddly enough, one of our classmates said that our project was probably the most practical out everybody else’s,” said Hsu’s partner.

It is still too early to tell the success of tildarling.com, but after breaking even only three months of operation and achieving top 20 rankings for many of their keywords, Hsu is optimistic, “Hey, we got an ‘A’ on our final project and it only cost us £6,000.”

tildarling.com moves to the U.S. where Hsu permanently lives and will test the success of it in a larger market, but he is just one case out of many new graduates who are making a major opportunity in a struggling economy.

Central London residential property prices rose by 3.9% in July 2007, the highest jump in a single month for 31 years, according to the Knight Frank Prime Central Location index. Lack of supply of suitable properties is considered the reason for the continued rise in residential prices throughout central London, with rises in house prices consistently outperforming gains in flat prices month on month since January.

July’s figures give an annualised growth of 36.4% – the highest annual growth since 1979 – and now the reasons for the lack of supply driving the outstanding price increases are coming under the microscope. It appears that foreign buyers have a large part to play, as 61% of all property over £4 million for sale in prime central London is sold to foreign buyers who, unlike domestic buyers tend not to have another property to release back into the market, thus restricting supply even further.

The substantial rise in property prices has also led to a shift in the behaviour of foreign buyers who initially buy their property for occupation while working in the City. In the past many would arrive to undertake a prestige job in the City and buy a property solely for occupation while they were in the country and sell the property immediately after returning home. But, because of substantial rises, such as the 36% recorded over the last year, property is increasingly being retained as an investment once the buyer returns home. This has helped fuel the property shortage and in turn keeps central London property values high.

In 2004 the average period that a foreign buyer would hold onto their property after returning home before selling it, was nine months. Last year that period had risen to 20 months and is still rising. It appears that rather than take a quick profit on their London property foreign landlords are now willing to reap an income from tenants while watching the capital value of their property investment surge.

Of course, foreign buyers cannot take all the blame – or credit – depending upon your point of view, as for the substantial and sustained increases in property prices in central London multi-million City bonuses have been swiftly invested in prime central London property, which is still seen as the most solid of investments. So, unless foreign buyers and city brokers choose to liquidate their investments the outlook for central London property seems bright indeed.
